Have you been curious about CBD oil for dogs?
Over the next few months, I’m going to be sharing my experiences with helping Cow deal with her anxiety with a combination of training and CBD oil products from HempMy Pet. I’m also going to be looking for new research about how CBD oil can help pets with symptoms of health issues like pain and nausea to help you decide if it could be a good choice for your dog.
In the meantime, learn what I’ve discovered so far in this review of HempMy Pet’s Small Wellness Bundle, which includes their 250mg Hemp Oil Tincture, Pumpkin Harvest Cookies and Hemp Infused Coconut Oil.
I received products and compensation from HempMy Pet to create content about their products, share my personal experiences and write an honest review. Little Dog Tips only features products that I love and use with my own dogs – I’m sure you’ll love them too!
What Is CBD Oil?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a substance found in cannabis and hemp plants. CBD has been shown in research studies and anecdotal cases to relieve anxiety, inflammation, nausea, seizures and many other symptoms of acute and chronic illnesses in both people and animals.
The hemp plant is high in CBD and low in THC (the substance found in marijuana plants that makes you feel “high.”)
It’s imperative that you do not confuse CBD oil and Cannabis oil. Cannabis oil is made from marijuana plants and contains high amounts of THC. Dogs and THC do not mix – at the least, it makes dogs disoriented, and in high concentrations it can cause their blood pressure to dangerously plummet, and can actually put them in a coma.
So, CBD oil is safe for dogs, not cannabis oil. Opting for a made-for-pets product like HempMy Pet eliminates any possible confusion.
CBD oil made from hemp plants is legal in all 50 states and many countries.
Hemp Infused Hemp Seed Oil (250mg Tincture) 1 fl. Oz
The hemp seed oil is the most versatile HempMy Pet product – you can drop it into your dog’s food or mix with their favorite snack.
The 1-ounce bottle holds 30-120 servings depending on your pet’s weight. So, for a pet over 60 pounds it would last a month if used daily. For small dogs, it can easily last three months if used daily. It’s best to refrigerate hemp seed oil, or at least keep it in a cool, dry place. Avoid contaminating the dropper. It stays fresh and potent for up to a year if stored properly.
My dogs don’t want to lick up the hemp seed oil unless it is mixed with something. If you’re going to use CBD topically, for example, on hot spots, I’d rather use the hemp seed oil than the coconut oil to prevent licking.
Hemp Infused Coconut Oil 100mg, 5 fl. oz
I thought the idea of hemp infused coconut oil was so cool – what dog doesn’t love yummy coconut oil?
Coconut oil has been shown to fight gingivitis (in a study of the effects of oil pulling on humans) because it has strong antimicrobial properties. Giving your dog a few licks of this hemp-infused coconut oil can benefit their dental health, though it shouldn’t be the only part of your dental care routine.
One jar of the coconut oil contains 30-120 servings, and at a lower price than the hemp seed oil. So, if you can only choose one and cost is a factor, I’d go with the coconut oil.
HempMy Pet’s hemp infused coconut oil does not need to be refrigerated. Scoop out servings with a clean spoon, and don’t double-dip so you will not contaminate the rest of the jar. Stored properly, it’s good for up to 6 months.
Pumpkin Harvest Biscuits
My dogs don’t normally like cookies, so I was surprised by how much they love the CBD-infused Pumpkin Harvest Biscuits. The biscuits give off a really appetizing aroma, they’re not bland like most dog cookies. I think it’s the mint and parsley that give it a rich taste that my dogs seem to love. I’ve even sneaked a bite – they’re pretty good!
I’m relieved that the ingredients list doesn’t contain any common allergens – mainly just grain free flours, pumpkin and egg – so they won’t make Cow itchy.
The serving size is one cookie per 10 pounds of body weight, and the bag contains 25 cookies, so it’s almost a month’s supply if you’re giving it daily. However, the extra carbs you’d be adding to your dog’s diet everyday could make them gain weight, so I’d recommend these for occasional use. They’re travel-friendly, though, so it’s great to have them on-hand for when you’re on the go.
What Makes HempMy Pet Different From Other CBD Companies?
I specifically chose to work with HempMy Pet because they actually grow and extract their own hemp in Colorado and every single batch of product is third party tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
With other companies, the products are often white-labeled. The seller might not even be able to tell you where the hemp was grown, and different batches can wildly vary in potency. You just don’t know what you’re getting.
Our Experience With HempMy Pet’s Small Wellness Bundle
The biggest reason I wanted to try HempMy Pet was to help Cow feel less anxious about strangers.
Whenever we have a houseguest, she barks and barks like an alarm, and it can be hard to get her to stop. I’ve successfully taught her to lie down and relax once the guest has come through the door and has been established as a non-threat, but when that person laughs too loudly or moves around, she starts barking again.
It’s tough to use CBD oil to help with that, though, because I don’t always know when guests are coming. I’d also prefer to not use it on a daily basis.
On a particularly people-y day, Halloween, I had the perfect opportunity to try out the CBD oil alongside our training. About thirty minutes before peak trick-or-treat time, I gave Cow two of the cookies topped with a dollop of the hemp-infused coconut oil – roughly enough for a 27-pound dog, but likely a bit over the suggested serving size on the containers.
CBD oil, especially from a known, organic source, is non-toxic. It’s not possible to overdose, though your pet would probably experience vomiting and diarrhea, at worst, if they were to snarf the whole container. When it comes to giving your pet too much, you’ll want to gradually add it to their diet, just to make sure their tummy can handle it.
Cow was not dopey or “high” on Halloween night. But she was markedly more chill. We went for our usual evening run as she donned her Wonder Woman costume, and though she shrank away if we got a little too close to any kids, she didn’t bark at anyone. In fact, there were a few children that she tried to sniff – but since she’s not used to children, I generally don’t let kids try to interact with her.
Back at home, she mainly lied down and watched the door. She did bark, but just once or twice with the sound of the doorbell, and happily munched on treats. Every time we had a guest, I gave both dogs some bites of food to build up a positive association – I served their whole dinner over the trick-or-treating hours.
Though Matilda and Cow did perk up and start to bark almost every time the doorbell ring, it was easy to redirect their attention and get them to eat. This is always a good sign – when a dog is over-anxious, it’s impossible for them to eat and they’ll refuse food. My dogs were alert, but overall they had a great night.
It’s tough to assess how different the night would have been without HempMy Pet. I would have expected Cow to get up more often, but she actually stayed on the couch and let out a measly little closed-mouth boof later into the night. Since we started training, it’s gotten pretty easy to get her to stop barking.
In more recent days, she’s gone from full-on explosive, fearful barking and rushing to the door to obligatory alarm barks. There’s less fear in her voice, but as a mix of several watch-dog breeds, she’s always going to be alert – it’s her job!
I’m hoping to continue training and using HempMy Pet as an aid to provide Cow with even more positive experiences so she can bond more easily with repeated houseguests. I don’t ever want to change her personality, and I love that she is alert. Her barking is helpful, and I feel safer when she’s around. My ultimate goal is to allow her to bark when she hears the doorbell… without suffering from anxiety around people once she is introduced to them.
Who Should Get HempMy Pet Products?
Even if your pets are perfectly healthy and do not suffer from anxiety, I would still recommend keeping a bottle of CBD oil as a staple in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit.
I was so glad I had my Wellness Bundle one day when Matilda jumped off a chair and landed on her back. She didn’t seem to be in pain, but I gave her a Pumpkin Harvest cookie to take the edge off, just in case she was a bit sore from the fall.
It’s great peace of mind to be able to offer your pet some relief without any worry about side effects. While you should, of course, see your vet to diagnose any health issues, and you shouldn’t be afraid of conventional medicine, it’s great to be able to give your pet something natural, especially if they’re just feeling a bit under the weather.
But I would especially recommend HempMy Pet Wellness Bundle to anyone who has a senior pet, or a pet who has any type of chronic illness or anxiety-related issue. The Wellness Bundle would be such a thoughtful gift for anyone whose pet has recently been diagnosed with cancer, for example. It’s so handy to be able to pack a few treats for a potentially stressful journey, or to offer your pets a few licks of the coconut oil when their tummy is upset. If your pet has a health condition, they may need the more concentrated products – you can email their customer service if you’re not sure which to choose.
Who Should Not Get HempMy Pet Products?
While there has been a lot of research on how beneficial CBD oil products can be for many health issues, it’s not a guaranteed preventative or cure – it’s still necessary to see a veterinarian or behaviorist to diagnose your pet and go over all of your treatment options. It can work amazingly for one animal, but another might not see the same results.
Keep an eye out for my upcoming posts on the different ways CBD oil can be used, how it works, and what researchers are still learning about its uses for domestic animals. In the meantime, you can learn more on the HempMy Pet website:
