We celebrated Matilda and Cow’s 7th birthday with some dog-friendly tacos. This wouldn’t be our first time enjoying tacos on the blog, you might remember our Cinco De Mayo refried bean taco treats from a while ago. These tacos are a whole meal with all the fixings, and the best part is that they’re a healthy, easy-to-digest celebration meal that most dogs can tolerate, no matter their usual diet.
A lot has changed since Cow had a bad bout of pancreatitis a year ago. She is on a low fat diet and rarely gets anything raw anymore. Now that she’s on a diet she can tolerate that’s also free of allergens from her 5Strands test, she’s finally in pretty good health. I’m hoping to slowly introduce fresher foods to her diet again. Even healthy fats like sardines sometimes cause a mild flare-up of diarrhea, so I’m hesitant to give her raw meals again. While there are some low fat raw food options, I’ve only given her small amounts of it here and there, instead giving her cooked chicken breast whenever I can.
Overall, she’s doing great. She’s thriving. I still feel as though she was at her healthiest when she was a youngster eating trash in the streets, but that’s probably because her food intolerances didn’t show up until she was about two years old.
As for Matilda, she continues to be happy to eat just about anything. They both absolutely adored these tasty chicken tacos. I made them alongside a chicken taco dinner for my family. I love that it’s such a filling, healthy meal with so many of our favorite toppings. After putting aside some plain mashed avocado for the dogs, I use the rest to make a delicious guac. No way are we waiting for the next doggy birthday to have another taco party!
Easy Chicken Tacos for Dogs Recipe
Ingredients
- Yellow corn tortillas
- Avocado, mashed
- Chicken breast, boiled and cubed
- Low fat cheese – we used queso fresco, but most types are fine for dogs in moderation
- Cilantro, chopped
- Use a mug to cut tortillas into mini rounds for tiny, dog-sized tacos.
- Heat tortilla rounds on a preheated pan or on a stove burner for about 15 seconds per side or until warm and flexible.
- Spread mashed avocado on each mini tortilla.
- Add chicken breast cubes to each taco.
- Sprinkle with cheese.
- Sprinkle with cilantro.
- Serve!
Seasoning Your Dog’s Food
While dogs don’t mind wolfing down bland, boiled chicken breast, you can add some seasonings to your dog’s food for extra flavor. Many seasonings, including cilantro, have antioxidants and disease-fighting properties. Just avoid onion and spicy pepper, and Google anything you’re not sure about.
And yes, avocados ARE safe for dogs. Only the peel, leaves, and pit of the avocado are toxic to dogs. They’re a great source of healthy fats. There’s even a dog food called Avoderm that contains avocados.
Added salt isn’t necessary and is best avoided.
